Faith and Fighting? Documentary Explores Lives of MMA Pastors
“Can you love your neighbor as yourself and at the same time knee him in the face as hard as you can?”
That’s a line from the new documentary, “Fight Church,” which explores the lives of MMA-fighting pastors.
Today on The Real Story, Gretchen Carlson spoke to Paul Burress, a former MMA fighter and pastor of Victory Church, and Academy Award winning director Daniel Junge.
Burress has combined his faith teaching and MMA fighting for the past 15 years. He stressed that the sport isn’t violent.
“You have two people who agree to get into a competition against one another. There’s no hatred there. In fact, some of my best friends in the world I’ve fought," Burress said.
Other ministries include dance and hockey, even an archery ministry that brings in hunters.
He told Gretchen, “For us, it’s just a sport. And we have a lot of different sports masters at our church. … I think we just take the talents, the gifts, the abilities God gives us and use it to try and make a difference in our community.”
While making the documentary, Junge said he realized there’s a growing number of fight ministries around the country.
“I really had to change the way I thought about this in the making of this film," he said.
"Fight Church" premieres on April 24th in Boston.
