The U.S. Navy and California Air National Guard have rescued a sick 1-year-old who was on a crippled sailboat off the coast of Mexico.

Charlotte and Eric Kaufman, of San Diego, Calif., were two weeks into a sailing trip around the world with their daughters – aged 1 and 3 – when 1-year-old Lyra developed a fever and a rash covering most of her body. She was not responding to medication.

Their sailboat had lost steering and communication abilities, so the couple sent a satellite call for help to the U.S. Coast Guard.

A team of National Guard members parachuted into the waters and stabilized Lyra while waiting for the USS Vandegrift. The warship arrived at the scene and transported the little girl to safety.

She is now in stable condition.
