A scary scene unfolded yesterday at a spring training game in Florida as Cincinnati Reds pitcher Aroldis Chapman took a line drive to the face. Chapman, an All-Star closer and one of the hardest throwers in MLB, was hit by a ball off the bat of Royals catcher Salvador Perez.

According to ESPN and AP, Chapman was undergoing surgery to repair a broken bone above his left eye and also suffered a mild concussion.

The team doctor said Chapman was "very lucky" to have not sustained a more significant injury.

Chapman immediately fell to the ground, writhing in pain, and was taken off by stretcher. The pitch that Perez hit was thrown at 99 mph.
