New Photos: McCain's Trip to Syria
Images posted on social media over the weekend give a glimpse into the senator's visit with rebel fighters.
Sen. John McCain made a surprise trip to Syria over the weekend, visiting the nation's rebels who are currently engaged in an uphill fight against the Syrian army. The trip's timing is critical for the rebels as their weapon supply dwindles and they're losing international legitimacy because of the amount of Al-Qaeda troops who are joining their ranks. They're also continuing to lose ground to the Syrian forces.
McCain has long-supported arming the rebels, especially certain rebel groups that he calls "vetted" ... something the Obama administration opposes.
And while the senator's trip will undoubtedly raise morale of the rebels, it's doubtful it will do anything to fix the problems they're seeing on the battleground every day, says Fox News correspondent Leland Vittert.
Over the weekend, the EU also lifted an arms embargo for Syrian rebels, as Russia said they plan to send missiles to the Assad regime.
