A housing developer in New York City is coming under fire for controversial plans that would require a luxury condo highrise to have separate entrances for low income residents and residents paying regular costs.

The building, under construction in the Big Apple and overlooking the Hudson River, is slated to contain 55 affordable housing units, the rent of which would start at $845 per month. The normal units would sell for around $1 million and up.

Critics are crying foul at the developers plan to force low income residents to use a separate door and elevator bank, some even charging that the developer is only looking to cash in on tax benefits that could be worth millions of dollars if the subsidized housing portion is included in the final construction.
