New Fears in Spread of Cyclospora Stomach Virus
Many people are now questioning the source of a parasite that's responsible for the illnesses of hundreds of people in the U.S. across at least 16 states.
Officials in two states believe the parasite is linked to a pre-packaged salad mix, but others aren't so sure that's the cause.
Dr. Marc Siegel told Shannon Bream on Friday's America Live that government organizations are part of the problem, because different organizations oversee agriculture versus the packaged vegetable products themselves.
"There's a gap in food safety between the USDA and the FDA," he said.
One bit of good news, he said, is that it's not transferrable from person to person. Rather, it lives in the environment - on fruit and vegetables, for example - before becoming infectious. Then, it lodges in the small intestine, creating flu-like symptoms.
