Top IRS Official to Plead the Fifth in House Hearing on Targeting Tea Party
Moments ago, a hearing regarding the IRS targeting Tea Party groups began in the nation's capitol, with Chairman Darrell Issa (R-CA) and ranking member Elijah Cummings (D-MD) giving opening statements.
This comes after the White House once again changed the timeline on when they learned of potential IRS misconduct.
"I believe that there was gross incompetence and mismanagement," Cummings said of the IRS in his opening remarks. It is expected that four officials will testify today, including Lois Lerner, the IRS Director of Exempt Organizations. Lerner is expected to exercise her Fifth Amendment right.
Stuart Varney weighed in on questions he expects to be asked of Lerner, but not responded to, including "who gave you the order and who did you tell up the chain that you were targeting conservatives, that you were protecting some liberal groups" and others. The other individuals set to testify are Neal S. Wolin, Deputy Secretary, Department of the Treasury, J. Russell George, Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration, and Douglas Shulman, former IRS Commissioner.
