A Dayton, Ohio, bus driver is crediting the Bible in his shirt pocket for saving his life. Rickey Waggoner had gotten out of his bus early Monday morning to check on a mechanical issue when three assailants approached and shot him.

The 49-year-old was shot twice in the chest at close range, but police say the bullets struck his contemporary version of the Bible, titled "The Message." That allowed him to fight back against his attackers, as he suffered another gunshot wound to his leg.

During the 911 call, above, the man says, “I had a book in my pocket. At first I thought it had went through, but it just feels like I’ve been hit with a sledgehammer in the chest and I’ve been cut on the arm.”

Police believe the attack may have been a gang initiation. With Waggoner seriously injured, the attackers fled and he was able to call 911.
