Emergency officials say the woman was driving to work in Asheville when she hit a patch of ice and skidded into the river.

She reportedly called her husband right away. When he arrived, he said he couldn’t get the car door open, so he smashed the window and pulled her safety.

Nathan Woods said, “I was thinking about the car filling up with water, I need to get her out because she could drown… so I just did whatever I had to do.”

Emergency responders treated the woman and took her to the hospital.
