Teen: 'I Was Suspended for Defending Special Needs Student From Bullies'
A high school student in Bryan, Texas, says he was suspended for standing up for his friend, a special needs student. Christian Tumax, 18, who has since returned to classes, confronted bullies at lunchtime on behalf of his friend, but school officials viewed the situation differently.
Based on surveillance video of the altercation, they concluded that Tumax was the aggressor, drawing a fierce backlash from other students who saw what happened.
"They had to base it off what they saw in the cameras," said Tumax. "They saw me go forward, and that's the reason I got suspended."
His fellow students tore into school officials on social media, even creating a Free Tumax hashtag.
The school has refused to comment on the decision, saying it's a confidential matter. Tumax says he was told that the suspension won't go on his permanent record.
