CAUGHT ON TAPE: Hapless Jewel Thief Breaks In, Gets Trapped in Store
This jewel thief probably thought he was pretty clever after he was able to get into a jewelry store after crashing through its ceiling. But things quickly took a turn for the worse, as he became hopelessly trapped inside.
The incident happened early Wednesday in Sandy, Utah, as the suspect was able to break into a rental unit next to the store. From there, he went through the ceiling crawl space and into the jewelry store.
But then he ran into a mountain of problems. First, he couldn't get into the shatterproof jewelry cases. Then, he realized he couldn't get out the same way he had come in. So he attempted to smash his way out with a fire extinguisher, but the windows and glass door wouldn't break either.
By then an alarm had been tripped and cops were quickly surrounding the store. The suspect, 32-year-old Gene Richins, was arrested a short time later and charged with felony burglary.
The owner of the store suspects that Richins was behind a previous robbery of about $75,000 worth of merchandise.
