The Red Cross says it’s desperately in need of blood.

The severe winter weather has canceled nearly 1,000 blood drives in 33 states. More snow is on the way tomorrow.

The weather has led to 33,000 lost blood and platelet donations, which is equivalent to how many donations would be lost if the Red Cross closed its doors nationwide for two full days.

Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood. More than 41,000 blood donations are needed each day.

Type O negative blood is particularly helpful because it can be used in emergency situations when a patient’s blood is unknown
