Last week, President Obama unveiled his “promise zones” initiative to encourage economic development in poverty areas throughout the country. The rollout comes on the heels of the 50th anniversary of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s “war on poverty.”

Today on Fox News Sunday, Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) said the best way to pull people out of poverty is to kick the economy into full gear. Part of doing that means reinvesting in our infrastructure and modernizing for the 21st century, the congressman said.

Van Hollen also made the argument for increasing the minimum wage. “The president’s promise zones are part of an overall strategy to try and get the economy going and have more broadly shared prosperity.”

He also took a swipe at Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI). Watch the full debate above!
