The suspect in a California kidnapping admitted to the crime in a bizarre jailhouse interview.

Investigators say David Douglas kidnapped seven-year-old Natalie Calvo at gunpoint from her driveway.

Douglas said he kidnapped the girl as a plea for help, claiming he has special abilities. He said he targeted Calvo because he believed that her mother was part of a conspiracy against him to take his 7-year-old son. Douglas said Calvo’s mother looked at him while she was loading groceries into a car, which is when he said he decided to follow her. He also admits to following three other girls earlier that day.

A quick-thinking Target employee helped save the girl. Roxanna Ramirez says she saw the suspect acting strangely in the parking lot, then wrote down his license plate number. She later learned of an Amber Alert matching the description of the suspect’s car, so she called police.

The suspect and the girl were found in a nearby marina, where Douglas had been living for two-and-a-half months.

Douglas has not yet been formally charged. He is being held on $4 million bond.
