VIDEO: President Obama Makes Case for Extension of Unemployment Benefits
President Barack Obama today addressed the nation on emergency unemployment insurance, urging Congress to pass legislation to renew federal benefits for the long-term unemployed.
The legislation unexpectedly cleared a Senate hurdle on Tuesday, as lawmakers voted 60-37 to limit debate on the three-month legislation.
Obama said that economists have shown that extending unemployment insurance actually helps the economy and creates new jobs. He said benefits don’t discourage people from getting jobs, stressing that unemployed Americans are “working their tails off” each day to find work.
He argued that the benefits have always been renewed, no matter which party was in control of the White House or Congress and when the unemployment rate was lower than it is now.
