Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) suggested that Monday’s terror attack on the Boston Marathon is “proof” that having the “ability to address security concerns is important,” and that such security concerns were one of the arguments against the sequester.
During testimony last week, Director of National Intelligence James Clapper suggested that sequestration changes are hampering national security. This morning, Xavier Becerra (D-Ca.) said that Boston in particular is having all sorts of sequester-related problems including that there isn’t enough funding for police officers and that children may not be able to get the vaccines they need because of shifts in funding.
Fox News Capitol Hill producer Chad Pergram asked Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) about those comments and about the Boston attack. Hoyer said in part:
I think there are multiple reasons for ensuring that we invest in our security, both domestic and international security, that we invest in the education of our children, that we invest in growing jobs in America and don’t pursue an irrational, across the board policy of cutting highest priorities and the lowest priorities essentially the same percentage.
So, I think this is clearly another place where it is demonstrated why having the ability to address security concerns is important. I think this is another proof of that. If proof is needed, which I don’t think frankly it is.
Megyn Kelly discussed the comments with Fox News digital politics editor Chris Stirewalt.
