On "Outnumbered Overtime" Thursday, Rep. Lee Zeldin said Michael Cohen has "no credibility," and he questioned why Special Counsel Robert Mueller would want an admitted liar as his "star witness" in the Russia probe.

Cohen, President Trump’s former personal attorney, pleaded guilty Thursday to making false statements to Congress about a Trump real estate project in Russia.

This marks the first time Mueller’s team charged Cohen as part of their investigation into Russian meddling and potential collusion. Cohen previously pleaded guilty in New York to violating federal campaign finance laws by arranging hush-money payments to women in 2016 “at the direction” of then-candidate Trump. Cohen has also been under criminal investigation as part of a grand jury probe into his personal business dealings.

The president swiftly fired back after news of the new guilty plea broke, blasting Cohen as a "weak person," and claiming his former attorney was "lying" to get a reduced sentence.

"Mueller's star witness has now admitted to being a liar criminally," Zeldin (R-N.Y.) said. "Now, you have a star witness who has less credibility than he did yesterday and an investigation that has less credibility than it did yesterday.

He noted that Cohen's crimes -- like many of Mueller's indictments -- are seemingly "unrelated to the Trump campaign."

"It seems like one indictment and guilty plea after another ... getting away from the heart of why the special counsel was created in the first place. And that was for there to be accountability and transparency with regards to whether or not the Russians interfered with the 2016 election," Zeldin said.

He said Trump is clearly ready for the investigation to come to a close, but more importantly, the country is ready for it to end.
