First lady Melania Trump drew widespread criticism Thursday for donning a jacket bearing the words "I really don't care, do u?" after visiting a migrant child detention center in Texas.

The jacket, reportedly available via Spain-based retailer Zara for $39, was spotted on the first lady as she left Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland and when she returned later.

Responding to the outcry over the curious fashion choice, her spokesperson said there was "no hidden message" behind the jacket. Hours later, President Trump offered another view on Twitter, saying that it was directed at the "fake news media."

Many in the media pounced, with President of the Center for American Progress Neera Tanden arguing on CNN that the jacket may have represented a "moment of true candor" from the administration.

"This administration doesn't care about these kids," she said, referring to the thousands of children separated from their families in border detention centers.

CNN's Kirsten Powers compared the first lady to Marie Antoinette, saying the jacket should have said "let them eat cake."

The "Outnumbered" panel reacted Friday to the media outcry, with Abby Huntsman questioning why Mrs. Trump wore the jacket in the first place after striking a compassionate note by visiting the detention center.

"That coat was such a distraction," she said, asking why no one in the White House thought about it overshadowing her visit.

Jessica Tarlov argued that the president actually wants this type of coverage to dominate the news cycle, so he can criticize the media later for reporting on the jacket instead of her visit.

"That makes more sense than anything else," Melissa Francis agreed, adding "it has to be contrived."
