Gingrich: Comey Was 'In the Tank' for Clinton, Out to Get Trump
The more we learn about former FBI Director James Comey, the more apparent it is that he was "in the tank" for Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election, according to Newt Gingrich.
On "Fox & Friends" Tuesday, the former House speaker pointed to an email written by former President Obama's national security adviser Susan Rice to herself in the last hours of the Obama administration.
In the email on Jan. 20, 2017 - the day of President Trump's inauguration - Rice described a Jan. 5 meeting between Obama, herself, then-Director James Comey, then-Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates and then-Vice President Joe Biden concerning the investigation into Russian election interference.
In the email, Rice wrote: "President Obama began the conversation by stressing his continued commitment to ensuring that every aspect of this issue is handled by the Intelligence and law enforcement communities ‘by the book.’ The president stressed that he is not asking about, initiating or instructing anything from a law enforcement perspective. He reiterated that our law enforcement team needs to proceed as it normally would by the book.”
Gingrich pointed out that Comey never disclosed to Congress that he attended this meeting.
He said Congress should bring Comey back in and ask him under oath if he briefed Obama, and if so, what he was asked.
He said if Trump was aware of how Comey handled the Hillary Clinton email probe -- including writing her exoneration months before interviewing her and changing his description of her handling of classified material from "grossly negligent" to "extremely careless" -- Trump would have fired Comey on day one, instead of several months after taking office.
"You just go through what we have learned about in the last six or eight months about Director Comey, you realize this guy was totally in the tank, doing everything he could to protect Clinton and get Trump. He really, I think, has a huge potential legal problem."
