When a fire broke out Monday at a commercial building in Anaheim, California, firefighters arrived on the scene to extinguish the flames and make a patriotic rescue.

While battling the blaze, two firefighters spotted an American flag flying atop the building.

They managed to navigate the flames and smoke, reach the flag, take it down and fold it properly.

The flag, which was owned by a retired Los Angeles Police Department officer, was returned to him in “great condition," according to Anaheim Police Sgt. Daron Wyatt.

"They got it before it was damaged,” Wyatt said.

It took approximately 80 firefighters more than two hours to put out the four-alarm fire. No injuries were reported.
