'Willing to Give Trump Some Credit': IL Dem Calls for Bipartisanship After SOTU

Watters: When Dems Root Against Trump, Sometimes 'They Look Like They're Rooting Against America'

After watching the Democrats remain largely silent during the State of the Union, mostly refusing to applaud during lines about a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants and the recovery of Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.), Tucker Carlson challenged a New York City politico to explain the decision.

Carlson told former New York City Public Advocate Mark Green that Democrats should take the McCarthy era as a "lesson for American liberals."

He said the time was marked by "hysteria" against the opposition "tak[ing] over the political system," adding that Democrats' "Trump-Russia" drumbeat elicits imagery of that time.

Carlson asked Green to respond to such Democratic criticisms as that from Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.) who said Trump's speech was well-translated from Russian.

Green, an author who worked with former Green Party presidential candidate Ralph Nader on several works, said Trump's speech was "passable - if you have amnesia over 18 months in the past."

Green said Trump has mocked everything and everyone from Meryl Streep to Mexicans and Muslims.

"He's silent on Putin and plays up MS-13," Green said, adding that the world is "laughing" at Trump supporters.

Carlson challenged Green to explain why Democrats would sit and "refuse to clap" when Trump praised the flag, the national anthem and veterans.

"Are you triggered by veterans?" he asked.

Green said he was not and pointed out that Trump had at the same time "gone after black athletes" in 2017.

"He is so anti-minority," Green said.

Green slammed the premise Trump's DACA path-to-citizenship offer should be taken seriously because of the president's simultaneous insistence on a border wall, which he called "unnecessary."
