Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA) is back at work after being shot this summer, and he still believes that Second Amendment rights are integral to America.

"This is part of our constitution and our country," the Louisiana congressman said on "Fox & Friends" on Tuesday. "Our Second Amendment rights are critical to what our Founding Fathers envisioned."

"Go read what Thomas Jefferson wrote, what John Adams wrote about the importance of people having firearms to protect themselves," he advised.

Scalise was shot at a congressional baseball practice in June by a man targeting Republicans. The incident sparked renewed debate over gun rights in America, but Scalise is recommending toning down the rhetoric.

He received "unbelievable love and support from all around the country" as he recovered in the hospital, including prayers from people who had never met him.

"You see the bad side of America, but there's so much more good, and I got to see and feel that directly," Scalise shared.
