One of President Barack Obama's top national security officials called out President Trump for lying in a tweet early this morning.

In a series of tweets, Ben Rhodes blasted the president's response to the nuclear threat from North Korea.

He said Trump's claim about having modernized the nuclear arsenal was "literally impossible" and an "alarming thing to lie about."

Trump tweeted this morning, "My first order as President was to renovate and modernize our nuclear arsenal. It is now far stronger and more powerful than ever before. Hopefully we will never have to use this power, but there will never be a time that we are not the most powerful nation in the world!"

Rhodes then targeted White House deputy assistant Sebastian Gorka, who called on Americans to come together, comparing the situation to the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Rhodes served as deputy national security adviser for strategic communications and was one of Obama's closest aides.

Lawmakers have also criticized Trump's bellicose language in which he threatened that North Korea will face "fire and fury" if it threatens the U.S.

"I'm not sure how that helps," said Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.)

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) said Trump is not helping things with his "bombastic language," while Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called it "reckless."
