President Donald Trump’s senior policy adviser Stephen Miller had a heated exchange with CNN reporter Jim Acosta during today's press briefing.
Acosta asked if a Republican proposal to lower the rate of legal immigration goes against the American principle etched at the foot of the Statue of Liberty: "Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free."
Acosta then asked if the requirement for immigrants to speak English was designed to "engineer" the policy so that only people from Great Britain and Australia are admitted to the U.S.
Miller said he was “shocked” by the statement and said it shows Acosta's “cosmopolitan bias.”
"That you think only people from Great Britain or Australia would speak English is so insulting to millions of hardworking immigrants who do speak English from all over the world," Miller said. "Have you honestly never met an immigrant from another country who speaks English outside of Great Britain and Australia?"
Acosta said it appears the Trump administration is "trying to engineer the racial and ethnic flow of people into this country."
"Jim, that is one of the most outrageous, insulting, ignorant and foolish things you’ve ever said," Miller fired back.
