A 12-year NYPD veteran was assassinated overnight in what the police commissioner called "an unprovoked attack."

Miosotis Familia, 48, was fatally shot in the head as she sat in her police vehicle in the Bronx around midnight.

Officers quickly responded and confronted 34-year-old Thomas Bonds, who was shot dead nearby. The gun used in the attack was recovered.

Familia was rushed to a hospital but died while undergoing surgery.

The New York Post reports that Bonds had a long rap sheet, including an arrest in 2001 for beating a police officer with brass knuckles.

Familia's partner frantically called for help after the attack, screaming, "My partner's been shot!" repeatedly.
