Rep. Filemon Vela (D-TX) reiterated this afternoon that the House Democrats need new leadership in order to win a majority in 2018.
Vela made headlines on Wednesday when he told Politico that "you'd have to be an idiot to think we could win the House with [Nancy] Pelosi at the top" in 2018.
The South Texas representative told Melissa Francis that he answered the question "as honestly as I could" and said Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) must ask herself whether her presence helps Democrats in swing districts.
"I think the answer is obvious," said Vela. "If we are going to regain the majority in 2018, we have to have new leadership."
The questions about Pelosi's future in the House leadership come on the heels of Democrat Jon Ossoff's loss in a Georgia special election.
The victor, Republican Karen Handel, focused her campaign on tying Ossoff to Pelosi and criticizing the many out-of-state donations to his campaign.
Rep. Tim Ryan (D-OH), who unsuccessfully challenged Pelosi for the leadership position, said in a CNN interview that he believes Pelosi is "more toxic" than President Trump in some areas of the country where Democrats need to gain support.
