Former Rep. J.D. Hayworth (R-Ariz.) said the mainstream media progressed from the "Making of the President" in 1960 to "The Lynching of the President" in 2017.
Hayworth said President Obama unsuccessfully tried to pin the term "fake news" on conservative news outlets, only to see the "alphabet networks" end up getting the moniker.
"The tenor of our times is summed up by two words-- fake news," he said.
He added that the press has become increasingly hostile to presidents they don't like since the 1960s.
He said that in 1960, Teddy White wrote "The Making of the President" about John F. Kennedy.
That was followed by a book about Richard Nixon by Joe McGinniss called "The Selling of the President," he continued.
"Now, updated for the 21st Century, we've got the 'Lynching of the President' going on now," Hayworth said.
