Charles Krauthammer said former President Obama effectively wiped out future Democratic candidates' ranks, leaving only aging left-wingers like Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.).

Krauthammer noted Sanders and Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) are seen as the leaders of the Democratic Party going into the next election.

He said that despite Obama's personal popularity, the derision toward his policies effectively "torched" Democrats' "entire Minor League system."

Krauthammer pointed out Sanders will be 78 around the time of the next presidential election, and that there are few younger options for the party to unite around.

Krauthammer said the only Democrats left to represent the party are "old progressives" and the "old vacationing-in-the-Soviet-Union hard left."

"What they have lost is an ideological center," he said.
