Twitter exploded last night after a tweet from Rachel Maddow, hyping the release on her MSNBC show of President Donald Trump's tax returns

But, according to many who watched, the report did not deliver the bombshell most were expecting.

Maddow reported on two pages of Trump's 2005 return, showing that he made $153 million in 2005 and paid $36.5 million in income taxes ($38 million in total taxes).

The reaction on Twitter? Brutal...

Conservatives mocked the over-selling of a non-story, while liberals expressed the same disappointment over the lack of a bombshell.

Sean Hannity and "The Blaze" host Tomi Lahren had a lot to say in response, with Hannity declaring that NBC is on a "corporate jihad" against the president.

He said all Americans should be deeply concerned about the illegal leak of the tax documents and that "deep state actors" keep pushing the "fake news story" that Trump colluded with the Russians.

Lahren said it was a "rough night" for the left and for those who have been attacking Trump over and over on the Russia issue.

She said the left continues to talk about Russia and taxes, ignoring other pressing issues.

Many viewers also bristled at Maddow's long opening monologue, followed by a commercial break before the underwhelming tax figures were even shared.
