President Trump responded Thursday night to Attorney General Jeff Sessions' announcement that he will recuse himself from the federal probe into possible Russian involvement in the 2016 election.

"Jeff Sessions is an honest man," Trump said in a statement, "He did not say anything wrong. He could have stated his response more accurately."

Trump was referring to an exchange between Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) and Sessions, then an Alabama senator, during his confirmation hearing.

The president said the outcry is a way for the Democrats to "save face" after losing an election they were determined to win.

"The Democrats are overplaying their hand. They lost the election and now, they have lost their grip on reality," Trump said.

He concluded his statement by saying the "real story" they should be clamoring for coverage thereof is allegedly "illegal leaks of classified... information."

"It's a total witch hunt," Trump said.
