Tom Perez has been named the new chair of the Democratic National Committee.

He defeated U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) in a vote, 235-200, that took place Saturday in Atlanta after the other candidates all dropped out of the race.

The labor secretary under former President Barack Obama immediately introduced a motion to name Ellison as deputy chair of the committee. He became the first Latino leader of the Democratic Party.
