Mexican officials say at least 31 people were killed and 70 were injured by an explosion that ripped through a fireworks market outside Mexico City.

Shocking video captures thunderous explosions and flashes of fire at the market in Tultepec, about 25 miles north of the capital.

Jose Luis Tolentino said he was in traffic and heard loud noises, so he began recording.

Tolentino's widely seen video shows a huge plume of smoke billowing into the sky as thousands of fireworks go off.

Pyrotechnics are a major industry in Tultepec, and the market was packed with shoppers buying fireworks for upcoming holiday celebrations.

Mexico State Gov. Eruviel Avila said they are investigating the cause of the blast.
