Residents of a Washington, D.C. bedroom community expressed outrage after a anti-religious banner was placed next to a Nativity scene.

The sign declared that religion is "but myth and superstition."

"That's the birth of Jesus sitting here," one critic of the Manassas, Va. banner said in disgust.

The banner reads:

At this Season of the Winter Solstice, let reason prevail.

There are no gods no devils no angels no heaven or hell there is only our natural world.

Religion is but myth and superstition that hardens hearts and enslaves minds.

A member of the Freedom From Religion Foundation obtained a permit and placed the sign right next to the manger scene.

Manassas officials say neither display is formally sanctioned by the city.
