General James "Mad Dog" Mattis [USMC-Ret.] made a surprise appearance at Donald Trump's 'Thank You Tour' stop in Fayetteville, N.C. on Tuesday.

Trump called Mattis the "living embodiment of the Marine Corps-- 'Semper Fidelis', Always Faithful."

"I'm grateful for the opportunity to return to our troops, our families and our civilians in the Department of Defense," Mattis said.

"With our allies strengthened and our country strengthened, I look forward to being the civilian leader" of the military, he said.

Mattis noted that he still required a Congressional waiver to be considered for the position because he has not been retired from the armed forces for seven years.

He must also be confirmed by the Senate.
