Embattled San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick was benched during the fourth quarter of Sunday's game against the Chicago Bears.

Kaepernick, who has made headlines with his controversial national anthem protest, ended the day with just four passing yards, as the 49ers lost their 11th straight game.

It was the first time in NFL history that a quarterback threw for less than five yards and was sacked five times in a game.

After the game, Kaepernick said he did not expect to be benched in favor of Blaine Gabbert, despite the dismal performance.

"I am surprised," he told reporters. "It wasn’t something that was expected. I’m always prepared and ready to do anything I can to help this team win."

People took to social media to react to Kaepernick's benching:
