President-elect Donald Trump and Vice President-elect Mike Pence on Thursday night kicked off their "USA Thank You Tour 2016" of the Midwestern states that helped propel their ticket to victory.

Before Trump and Pence spoke at a campaign-style rally in Cincinnati, Newt Gingrich said that the tour is about Trump thanking and reconnecting with the people who elected him.

"Trump gains enormous strength from the American people, from being with them, from feeling their support, their strength, their enthusiasm," Gingrich said on "Tucker Carlson Tonight."

The former speaker of the House said it's that strength that gives Trump an "extraordinary energy" that hasn't been seen from a president since Theodore Roosevelt.

Gingrich said the tour is also a reminder to the Washington establishment that the president-elect is leading an army of Americans who are demanding change.

"He has a contract with the American voter. He has a new deal for African Americans. He has really committed himself to dramatic change."
