Charles Krauthammer believes that the Republican Party is headed for a "civil war" whether Donald Trump wins or loses the presidential election.

On "America's Newsroom" today, Krauthammer explained that if Trump wins the presidency, he will "irreversibly reshape" the GOP around his populist vision.

"Particularly, the most obvious issues are going to be immigration and trade," Krauthammer said. "It will be a populist party. The country will not have a conservative party in the sense of a Reaganite party."

On the other hand, if Trump loses, Krauthammer doesn't think he will simply walk away like Bob Dole or Michael Dukakis.

"He feels he's created something," Krauthammer said. "I think he stays in the game. He becomes the kingmaker."

He said that either outcome would put Trump at odds with Paul Ryan and the more traditional Republican lawmakers.

"The civil war will begin on Wednesday, will begin tomorrow morning."
