"He will be the power broker," syndicated columnist Charles Krauthammer said of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's role in the GOP, whether he wins or loses on Tuesday.

"This is not a Michael Dukakis [-type candidate]," he said, referring to the former Massachusetts Democrat who lost to George Herbert Walker Bush in 1988 and all but retired from politics.

"This is a man who... created a movement out of nothing. It's very hard to do," Krauthammer said, adding that he forsees the party "splitting in two."

"[He will lead] the populist element that he has now created. The other side will be led by Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.)."

"The test is going to be [whether] he can bring down Paul Ryan. If he is able to get behind a movement to deny Ryan the speakership, he becomes the de facto leader... a force in the party."
