Police in Texas are investigating photos, shared on Facebook, that showed a man pulling a girl by the hair through a Walmart.

A concerned shopper, Erika Burch, spotted the man and young girl and took photos. Burch's subsequent Facebook post has been shared more than 150,000 times in the past two days, prompting people to call Cleveland, Texas, police.

"The Cleveland Police Department has received numerous calls in regards to a child having her hair pulled last night at Cleveland Wal-Mart. We want to assure the community this case is currently being investigated by our Detective Division. CPS has been contacted per our policy and is also investigating this case. A joint investigation is currently being conducted by both agencies," the department wrote.

Police told KTRK on Tuesday that officers have met with the family.

Burch explained that the man was holding the child's hair against the shopping cart handle and pulling her alongside.

In one photo, the girl appears to be crying. A witness told KPRC-TV that the man was angry at the girl for not staying near the cart as he shopped.

Burch said she and her husband intervened and were told by the man to mind their own business.

She said the girl pleaded with the man to stop and that police were called. An officer was in the Walmart and arrived quickly while Burch and her husband argued with the man, she wrote.

Burch explained that the officer and a sergeant did not arrest the man because there was no visible bodily injury on the girl and no hair was missing.
