Texas Boy Running Late to School Stops for Pledge, Prayer

Former President George W. Bush today paid a visit to the first elementary school in Texas named after him.

The 43rd president said it was a "huge honor" to have the school in the town of St. Paul named after him.

"The building is beautiful," Bush said. "I'm not so sure I'm worthy of such a beautiful building. I know this: The students are worthy of such a beautiful building."

The Wylie school board voted unanimously to name the $19 million new school after Bush in 2014. It opened three weeks ago.

Board president Barbara Goss said they chose to name it after Bush because they wanted a person "who made a significant contribution to society and education, and whose name would lend prestige and status to an institution of learning."

At the dedication ceremony, Bush offered advice to parents and students in the audience.

"It's really important for parents to understand that you are your child's first teacher. It's essential that you read to your child, help your child on homework and I would also ask you to stay very much involved with George W. Bush Elementary."

He told the students, "If you cannot read, you cannot succeed," and asked them to choose reading books over TV or electronic devices.

School Principal Maricela Helm said she hopes having the school named after Bush will teach them things like courage, leadership and perseverance.

"He showed a lot of grit, and those are all things we are pushing through our Wylie way," she said.

Bush wrote about the visit and shared a video on Instagram of the children singing to him.

"When I was a student, it's safe to say my teachers never imagined there'd be a school named after me. I sure didn't. So I was thrilled to attend the dedication of George W. Bush Elementary today, and I'm grateful to the outstanding students, teachers, faculty, and leaders of Wylie ISD for this honor. Spending time with these students gave me confidence that our great state and country will continue to be great."
