Newt Gingrich appeared on "Fox and Friends Weekend" today to address a rough past few weeks of media coverage for Donald Trump, including a scathing New York Times piece that portrayed his campaign as "sputtering."

Gingrich said the exact same article could have been written about Ronald Reagan in August 1980, and Reagan went on to beat Jimmy Carter in the largest electoral defeat for any incumbent president in American history.

"All campaigns have tensions, all campaigns have confusion," Gingrich said. "Why is nobody at The New York Times writing a story on how does the Clinton campaign cope with the number of criminal charges that leak out day after day?"

"Donald Trump may make an occasional verbal mistake. She both lies and engages in criminal activity. At some point, the weight of those two is pretty disproportionate."
