The Orlando nightclub shooter's father attended Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton's rally in Kissimmee, Florida, on Monday night.

Cameras captured Seddique Mateen - whose son Omar Mateen killed 49 people and injured 50 in a shooting at a gay nightclub in June - standing in the crowd.

Mateen told WPTV that he wanted to attend the rally as a member of the public and a Clinton supporter.

"It's a democratic party, so everyone can join," he added, saying that he didn't think anyone should be surprised to see him at the rally.

"Why should they be surprised? I love the United States, and I've been living here a long time," Mateen said.

In her speech Monday night, Clinton expressed support for the survivors of the attack and the loved ones of those who were killed.

"We can't ever let that kind of hatred and violence break the spirit and break the soul of any place in America," she said.

When the news of Mateen's attendence at the rally broke, the Clinton campaign gave a statement to ABC's Liz Kreutz:
