Many people are outraged after a California Jack in the Box employee said he was fired for giving free coffee and tacos to a veteran.

Alex Mesta, who worked at a Jack in the Box in Bakersfield, said that he would give the man free coffee from time to time because he was a veteran and a regular customer.

About two weeks ago, Mesta decided to give the veteran two tacos that were left over and were reportedly going to be thrown away.

"It was either throw them away or make them for him," Mesta said.

He revealed that he wasn't written up or warned, but instead was fired on Monday.

"I know what I did wasn't right to them," Mesta said. "But to me, it felt right."

When a local man posted Mesta's story on Facebook, it immediately got a strong response, with many people taking to social media to share their frustration with how Jack in the Box handled the situation.

After the backlash, Jack in the Box issued a statement:

We too are grateful to our veterans and to the men and women currently serving in the armed forces. Regarding this incident, while it would not be appropriate to provide complete details on an internal disciplinary issue, our actions in this case were not based on just one incident and had nothing to do with the guest’s military experience.
