A 10-year-old California girl was killed while saving two toddlers from a runaway SUV Monday night.

Kiera Larsen and other children were playing in the yard when a Mercedes-Benz SUV began rolling in reverse down a sloping driveway.

Kiera pushed the two younger children out of the way, but the SUV hit her, pushing her into a fence.

She was rushed to the hospital, where she later died.

Kiera's parents and community members are calling her a hero, and now there are flowers, balloons, a candle and a teddy bear near the spot where she was killed.

"She saved both my daughters lives, my two kids, all I have, and both could have been gone in an instant," Alyssa Jenkins, the mother of the two saved children, said. "She stepped in and took over and did what she knows. And that's to protect those around her."

Investigators don't know how the SUV got into neutral and began to roll.

A GoFundMe campaign has been started to help the Larsen family with funeral expenses.
