British-born actor and director Alan Rickman has died at age 69 after a battle with cancer, his family announced today.

Rickman, best known recently for his role as Professor Severus Snape in the "Harry Potter" movies, waged a secret battle against cancer. 

“The actor and director Alan Rickman has died from cancer at the age of 69. He was surrounded by family and friends," the family said in a statement.

Rickman married his longtime partner, Rima Horton, last year. The couple was together since 1977.

Among his many other roles on the silver screen, Rickman played the Sheriff of Nottingham in "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" in 1991 and Hans Gruber, the villain in "Die Hard," in 1988.
