U.S. military officials have now explained the strange, bright lights that were seen over the western United States.
The bright lights - which triggered an array of theories on social media last night - came from the debris of an SL-4 rocket body booster launched from Russia on Monday, U.S. Strategic Command announced.
The fireball, as some described it, was observed over parts of southern California, Nevada and Arizona when the space junk re-entered the Earth's atmosphere.
The Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles was flooded with calls from reporters and residents, but had no explanation.
