See Gretchen's Take on Steve Harvey's Colossal Miss Universe Gaffe
Gretchen Carlson, who was crowned Miss America in 1989, weighed in this afternoon on Steve Harvey's colossal gaffe at the Miss Universe pageant.
At the dramatic final moment, Harvey announced Miss Colombia to be the winner.
After several minutes, he realized he had made a mistake, and she was actually the first runner-up. It was Miss Philippines who should have been crowned.
Miss Colombia, Ariadna Gutierrez, had the crown on her head before it was snatched away and given to Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach.
Harvey has since apologized profusely, saying he misread the card that was handed to him.
Since Sunday night, Harvey has been reported to have missed rehearsals.
But regardless of the reasons for the mistake, Carlson said she cannot imagine what it would have felt like to be Gutierrez at that moment.
"The only thing we know for sure is this: Miss Colombia will never be able to forget what it feels like to have the crown on her head and then have it all taken away. And Miss Philippines will never be able to experience what it truly feels like to win. It's impossible to get that exact moment in time back," she said.
Carlson added that the Miss America pageant has protocols in place to guard against that type of error.
