Fox News debate co-moderator Bret Baier asked Mike Huckabee for his view on the evolving culture of the U.S. military, with women serving in combat roles and "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" being dropped.

Baier noted that Defense Secretary Ash Carter said recently that the armed forces is moving toward welcoming transgender Americans to serve.

Huckabee answered that the United States military is not a "social experiment."

"The purpose of the military is to kill people and break things. It's not to transform the culture by trying out some ideas that some people think would make us a different country and more diverse. The purpose is to protect America," he said.

Huckabee said he's not sure how paying for transgender surgery for service members will make our country safer.
