A Virginia Beach lifeguard has been suspended after being caught napping on the job.

Heather McGee was vacationing with her family at the Oceanfront when she spotted the unidentified lifeguard and snapped a photo.

"It's very upsetting considering there are families out there that are trying to enjoy the beach and if anything happens they need somebody to rely on," McGee told WVEC.

Captain Tom Gill, a supervisor with the Virginia Beach Lifesaving Service (VBLS), assured McGee that the lifeguard would be suspended.

"Appropriate disciplinary action was taken but, since it is a personnel matter at this time I am not at liberty to say," Gill told WVEC. "This does not represent our guards and the great work they have done this summer and will continue to do."
