Cops: Mom Drove Drunk as 8-Year-Old Daughter Clung to Car
A Minnesota mom is accused of drunk driving as her 8-year-old daughter clung to the outside of her car.
Police say the little girl grabbed the car to stop 46-year-old Rena Mae Giancherio from leaving, but Giancherio just kept driving.
Neighbor Terry Heller, 16, was the primary witness as he was outside playing with younger neighborhood children. Heller said it appeared the girl was trying to stop her mother from driving but fell from the car as her mother drove away, leaving the girl alone in the street.
"I went over to check on her and her knees are all cut up, she's on the curb just crying, and the mom is already gone, just drove off, she didn't stop or look down," said Heller.
Heller said the girl was standing on the driver's side running board, banging on the car window, holding on to the door handle and yelling at her mother to stop.
The 8-year-old girl eventually jumped off the moving vehicle, skinning her knees and injuring her foot, police say.
The little girl told police that her mom drank “half a bottle” of alcohol. Giancherio’s blood alcohol level was nearly four times the legal limit when authorities arrested her.
Giancherio has been charged with criminal vehicular operation, child endangerment and drunken driving.
